The ENV variable was developed for this purpose where people want to prototype something new or when do custom builds. Obviously, migrating to it now would only make sense if it would simplify matters when maintaining the addon.

Thanks! I will take a look at DH_EXTRA_ADDONS, I guess it could simplify our work when will we have to rebase Apertis on a newer Debian release.
