New Apertis 17.12 stable release available

Hello everyone, the new Apertis 17.12 stable release is now available! You can find the full release notes at https://wiki.apertis.org/17.12/ReleaseNotes Some highlights from this release: * New infrastructure to build images The new pipeline based on the debos tool is meant to be faster and more flexible, and also allow developers to easily build custom images on their machines. * LAVAv2 Our testing rig has been switched to LAVAv2, after LAVAv1 development has stopped. This gave us support for ARM64 boards and for running tests in QEMU, freeing resources on the hardware targets. * OSTree Preliminary work has been started to use OSTree as the basis for a robust and efficient update mechanism. * LXC template A template script for LXC makes using Apertis in a container as simple as possible, using OSTree for updates. Hello everyone, the new Apertis 17.09 stable release is now available! You can find the full release notes at https://wiki.apertis.org/17.09/ReleaseNotes Some highlights from this release: * Application framework running in containers The application framework shipped with Apertis no longer depends on privileged Btrfs operations, making it suitable to be used in containers as well. * Platform guide A new guide explains what the Apertis platform is, what it offers and what are the benefits of its approach: https://developer.apertis.org/platform-developers.html * Release branching improvements To make the release process as quick and reliable as possible, the branching process has been defined more clearly and it is now largely automated. * Inter-domain communications The inter-domain communications design now has some provisions for sharing large amount of static data as bulk transfers, such as firmware updates or map data for offline navigation. Hello Suma, I am using the 17.06 release version. I was able to solve the 1st problem but are unable to figure out the 2nd one. Additionally, the documentation states that the desktop should contain shortcuts to start and stop the emulator --> these I do not see on my desktop. However, this is not so important for me right now. Right this moment, to get my workspace up and running would be sufficient. I shall go through the documentation and check again. Hello Apertis, I am trying to build an app for apertis but are facing certain problems that I have explained below. Has any of you faced any such issues? Problem 1: I get the following error when I select the Add guest additions CD image in Virtual Box: Unable to insert the virtual optical disk C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxGuestAdditions.iso into the machine Apertis. Could not mount the media/drive 'C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso' (VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED). Private area on developer portal has been decomissioned

Hello all, the way the developer portal was set up, with Backworth mangling the static HTML files, has been causing rendering issues. The login itself has been not functional due to changes in the captcha system for quite some time. Since the private area has not served any actual function for a long time and currently there's no plan to make use of it, we decomissioned it and now https://developer.apertis.org/ is a plain static website generated by HotDoc. We took the chance to automate the way it gets published. New Apertis 17.06 stable release available

Hello everyone, the new Apertis 17.06 stable release is now available! You can find the full release notes at https://wiki.apertis.org/17.06/ReleaseNotes Some highlights from this release: * Application framework for headless setups A leaner version of the Canterbury/Ribchester application framework that targets deployments not tied to the Milldenhall HMI is now part of the release, making Apertis even more flexible. * Apertis running in a container Apertis can now be run in a LXC container and detailes setup instructions are now available in the wiki. In this release the application framework still depends on privileged Btrfs operations, but the work to avoid that dependency has been already landed in th 17.09 archives. * Sample app-bundles Three new application bundles have been added to demonstrate how to use simple web APIs over HTTPS, how to use platform services like Newport and how to make app-bundles shipping an agent with no UI. * AppArmor in full enforcing mode on headless images AppArmor protection is now completely enforced on the minimal images for headless setups, matching our security goals on that kind of setup. * ARM64 support in development tools An ARM64 cross-compiler is now available in the Apertis 17.06 SDK images, ready to be used with the Apertis Development Tool and the pre- generated ARM64 sysroots published on the Apertis web server, enabling full app-bundle development for ARM64 targets from the Apertis SDK. * Inter-domain communications The inter-domain communications design has been expanded to cover container-based setups, domains not running Linux or not running a dbus-daemon, service discovery, and audio and video streaming across domains. Hello everyone, the new Apertis 17.03 stable release is now available! You can find the full release notes at https://wiki.apertis.org/17.03/ReleaseNotes Some highlights from this release: * ARM64 support All the packages in the archive have been rebuilt for the 64bit version of the ARM instruction set. No full images are available at the moment, as no reference hardware has been selected. * Application framework on headless setups Minimal images without HMI now ship the application framework with the Canterbury application manager taking care of running agents. * Mildenhall UI toolkit The major pain points about using the Mindelhall UI toolkit from third-party application have been addressed, making it more reliable and maintainable. * Metadata-based permissions design A first set of use-cases have been collected to provide the foundation for designing a metadata-base permissions system which would save application authors from having to learn the fine details of the AppArmor rules language. * Drop unused components A few old, no longer used components have been dropped to be able to focus on our core values. Some have been deprecated, with the intent of dropping them once all the depending applications and services have been ported to the recommended solutions.
